Tor Project to auction first Onion URL ever created as NFT
The Tor Project is auctioning the first Tor Onion domain ever created, duskgytldkxiuqc6.onion, as an NFT.
The non-profit Tor Project operates the decentralized Tor network operating over the Internet, which allows users to access websites anonymously and special Onion (.onion) URLs only accessible through Tor.
Commonly referred to as the dark web, Tor allows website developers to create special onion services that are only accessible through the Tor network and provide anonymity to the owner of the service.
The first onion service ever created by the Tor Project is Dusk at http://duskgytldkxiuqc6.onion, which is commonly used as an example of an Onion service in Tor related documentation and help files.
As a fundraiser, Tor is auctioning off the cryptographic private key RSA1024 used to create Dusk as well as a one-of-a-kind NFT artwork titled “Dreaming at Dusk” created from the key by Itzel Yard (@ixshells).
Tor auction is on foundation.app, the Edward Snowden platform recently auctioned an NFT for 2,224.00 ETH (~ US $ 7 million).
The winning bidder will receive the key on November 1, 2021, and the Tor Project says it can be delivered as the “owners” wish.
“Hereinafter, the owner (s) of the NFT ‘Dreaming at Dusk’ on November 1, 2021 00: 00UTC will be called ‘The Owners’. The Owners will receive the private key RSA1024 of this onion service. private will be sent to owners in whatever way they prefer – whether it be an encrypted message over whatever protocol they choose, uploaded to a blockchain, or physically shipped to a USB stick or DVD player . “
“After receipt of the private key by them, the private key belongs to the owners and can be used in any way the owners deem appropriate. The owners can contact us at dusk[at]torproject.org. Owners can refuse to accept the private key if they wish, âthe Disk Tor service currently reads.
Readers should note that the winner of the auction will receive the private key for Dusk once Tor completes the migration of Tor onion services from version 2 to version 3.
This depreciation means that the winner cannot use the Dusk private key to host the Onion service, and the key will simply be an artifact of Tor history.
