Staff have set up free access to LinkedIn Learning to work for them: UI News: Indiana University

Interpersonal skills are important in Jeanne Collins’ job as a recruitment and training specialist in the Department of Human Resources at Southeast Indiana University. When the opportunity arose to take empathy and listening classes, she appreciated and jumped at the opportunity.

Indiana University Human Resources began offering free access to LinkedIn Learning courses on May 1 to support the professional and personal development of full-time staff members on all of its campuses.

Over 15,000 expert-led courses are available via a series of short videos that can be viewed during free time or split as needed. Some have interactive components, like a quiz.

So far, more than a third of eligible staff have activated their LinkedIn Learning accounts.

“They are fun,” Collins said. “I’m doing it just to see what I can learn.”

Collins said she took about 30 courses, including on fear of public speaking, working from home, employee engagement and resilience.

“I like listening skills because I tend to want to interrupt,” she said.

Kanti Crain, deputy director of the Office of Human Subjects at IUPUI, said she took courses related to management and leadership because she was a manager for the first time. Topics included humble leadership and how to have difficult conversations.

“I focused on the kind of leader I want to be,” she said.

Crain said she preferred classroom learning because of personal engagement, and she wondered how online classes would work because her attention span is short when watching videos. But she said the classes worked well because many are short videos and she can jump to specific segments quickly.

David Underwood, an information technology professional for the Document Services Center on the Bloomington campus, said he was excited to hear that LinkedIn Learning courses will be offered free to staff.

“I immediately wanted to take a look at it because I always think training opportunities should be taken seriously for someone in the IT field,” he said.

One of the courses Underwood took was for Windows Server 2019. He said the course was timely because his department was going to be using this software for a project and he had no prior hands-on experience with it.

“It helped the project at work,” Underwood said.

Underwood said he plans to take courses related to computer security, and added that he hopes the courses will be available for an extended period.

UI Human Resources had been looking for an on-demand training resource for some time. When staff members started working from home or working in new ways, due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the time seemed right to offer LinkedIn Learning, said Amy Batule, manager of leadership development training. talents and organizations.

“It’s a great resource that allows employees to guide their own development,” she said. “Every employee can develop their skills and learn what they want, when they want.”

An added benefit is that some courses can be used for continuing education credits, Batule said. Here are some of the organizations for which courses align with continuing education requirements:

  • International Institute for Business Analysis.
  • National Association of State Councils of Accountancy.
  • Computer Technology Industry Association.

As of July 1, more than 4,100 employees have taken more than 14,100 courses and more than 107,000 videos have been viewed, Batule said. The five most popular courses for May and June were (login may be required to view):

Some courses are UI specific, such as Employee engagement: My voice at IU. Others are appropriate, such as Avoid burnout.

Eligible staff members can activate a LinkedIn Learning account via a link on the UI human resources website.

Staff members who activated LinkedIn Learning accounts received an email survey earlier this week for feedback.
