How to Launch Your Cybersecurity Career Using LinkedIn Learning Courses

While earning a master’s or other advanced degree can be a great way to change careers or earn a higher salary, these programs often require a significant investment of time and money. For example, a master’s degree in cybersecurity from the University of California at Berkeley, which Fortune ranks as having the #1 program in the United States, costs around $75,000 to complete.
However, these programs can help graduates achieve strong professional results. Some cybersecurity graduates from the UC Berkeley program manage to double their salary after graduation, to $200,000. Cybersecurity workers are also in high demand with over 700,000 vacancies in the United States alone. Worldwide, the number of unfilled cybersecurity jobs has increased by 350%, from 1 million positions in 2013 to 3.5 million in 2021, according to Cybersecurity Ventures.
“Today’s job market is all about skills,” says Jeff Kellum, senior technology content manager at LinkedIn Learning. Fortune. “With an estimated 3.5 million cybersecurity roles unfilled by 2025, the ability to learn and showcase in-demand skills is critical for anyone hoping to step foot in the doorway into space.”
One way to start your journey to becoming a cybersecurity professional is to start with the basics. LinkedIn Learning offers a variety of cybersecurity-focused courses, from foundational to preparation for advanced certifications.
“Faced with an uncertain macroeconomic climate, the ability to learn and showcase in-demand skills is critical to helping people get their foot in the door of a new business or find a new role within their organization. “said Hari Srinivasan, vice president of product at LinkedIn, wrote in a blog post in late August. “For many professions, certifications have become key to that success, with the number of people on LinkedIn who have added certifications to their profile increasing by 44% over the past two years.”
Fortune has compiled a few cybersecurity courses for viewing on LinkedIn Learning for those interested in learning more about the field. We’ve also included a list of 19 learning paths and courses offered by LinkedIn to prepare cybersecurity workers for the most in-demand certifications. LinkedIn Learning is available to LinkedIn users with a premium account, which can cost around $30 to $60 per month, depending on the plan you purchase.
Cybersecurity courses for beginners
- Fundamentals of cybersecurity
This course helps learners understand the basics of cyber security, including explanations of cyber threats, cyber criminals, cyber risk management, and cyber security incident response. The fundamentals of cybersecurity are taught by Malcom Shore, who served as director of New Zealand’s Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB). The course is approximately two hours in total and includes instructional videos, chapter quizzes, and a final exam.
- Transitioning to a Cybersecurity Career
This course is tailor-made for professionals who wish to redirect their career towards cybersecurity. Transitioning into a career in cybersecurity helps learners leverage their current skills, whether in IT or a related field, cybersecurity. The course also includes resume tips, interview strategies, and resources for finding cybersecurity jobs. The course, which lasts just over an hour, is taught by Marc Menninger, who has worked in cybersecurity for over 20 years.
- Become a cybersecurity professional
LinkedIn also offers a comprehensive learning path for professionals who want to pursue a career in cybersecurity. The learning path, Become a Cybersecurity Professional, is approximately six and a half hours long and consists of five courses: Cybersecurity Fundamentals, Cybersecurity Threat Landscape, OWASP Top 10 Learning, cybersecurity careers and certifications: first steps, and land your first job in cybersecurity. If you complete the entire learning path, you receive a certificate of completion for your work.
LinkedIn Learning also offers 19 preparation courses for the best certifications related to cybersecurity. Among the 15 highest-paying IT certifications in 2022, three were related to cybersecurity, according to Skillsoft, which offers online training and courses on technology topics. These certifications have also helped professionals earn paychecks over $150,000.
“Security has always been well paid and it really comes down to scarcity, both in the number of professionals and in the skills required,” said Mike Hendrickson, vice president of technology and development at Skillsoft. Fortune. “With the limited number of security professionals today, organizations need to make their offerings attractive enough, both in terms of compensation and professional development opportunities. Skills expectations are also high for these professionals.
