A new customer recently sent me his LinkedIn profile URL and asked me what I thought of his title. Reading it, I cringed my teeth. It started with:
The voice in my brain was screaming, “No, no! Working with hundreds of recruiters and hiring managers these days, I can tell you using words like Jedi describing yourself is not a good idea. Comparing themselves to a Star Wars character is not something they appreciate. They also do not suggest that you call yourself a “guru”, “master”, “tycoon” or “ninja”. Why? Because to them, to refer to oneself in this way seems both silly and narcissistic.
Don’t sell yourself too much
The job of a recruiter is to determine your skill level. They want to be a judge. When you oversell your skills on your LinkedIn profile, it screams desperation. It feels like trying way too hard. The immediate image in their head is someone who needs to be the center of attention and dominates the conversation. Is that the message you want to get across?

A better way to optimize your LinkedIn title is to list the key skills you want to use in your next role. Recruiters use the platform to research the skills they’ve been told are needed to do the job. The LinkedIn search results algorithm is like searching the Internet: to sift through millions of profiles and provide a list of the best matches, it must search for those keywords in certain places on your profile. If the keywords are in your title, you send a message that these skills are important to you. Which means you will appear higher in the results.
So, avoid the goofy terminology and stick to words that will help you get found and noticed for all the right reasons!
