Firefox recommended URL autocomplete broken after v104 update
New updates are added at the bottom of this story…….
The original story (published August 30, 2022) follows:
Mozilla Firefox remains one of the most popular competitors against all other search engines. It is known to be a secure and private web browser.
It offers the best combination of performance, support for new web standards, functionality, privacy protection and low memory usage. But lately, it seems that the recommended URL autocomplete is not good.
Firefox “recommended URL autocomplete” broken
Usually when I type a letter in the address bar it suggests previously visited websites. It made it easy to get to the websites I wanted to access. But now, every time I start typing, it autocompletes websites I’ve never even visited and shows search suggestions I’ve never searched for.
With recent updates, I get autocomplete suggestions that I don’t care about. For example, when I’m about to go to Reddit, typing “Re…” gives me “Redbox”. Which doesn’t interest me.
It looks like Firefox’s URL autocomplete is broken or not working properly. The issue has been troubling users since the latest Android v104.1.0 update.
Instead of recommending sites that have already been visited or bookmarked, Firefox simply directs them to some of the mainstream sites.
Affected users even tried to delete and remove cookies from unwanted websites but to no avail.
Official recognition and potential workaround
Fortunately, a member of the Firefox team acknowledged the problem and said they were working on a fix.
Thanks! I think I have a direction to solve this problem and I agree that the resulting problem would only show up intermittently.
In the meantime, disabling bookmarks appears to fix the problem with Firefox recommending unwanted or most-visited websites, according to a Redditor. However, disabling it doesn’t populate anything, including bookmarks.
Hopefully Mozilla will release a proper fix soon so that users can access bookmarked or previously visited sites without any issues.
That said, we’ll report back with more details as we have new information to share, so stay tuned.
Update 1 (September 27, 2022)
5:03 p.m. (IST): One of the affected people has confirmed that the autocomplete problem for recommended URLs has been fixed in the latest v104.2.0.
I updated to 104.2.0 and can confirm that the issue is resolved for me. Thanks a lot! (Source)
